Griffin Theatre Company

Having one of Australia’s greatest artists creating for the Griffin stage is thrilling said Griffin Artistic Director Lee Lewis who will direct Emerald City.

I thought that if any artist on the planet was going to be able to create a design for the world of Emerald City it would be Ken Done. No one captures the colour and spirit of this great land better than him. Ken Done is one of our National Treasures, as is David Williamson. Two of them under the roof of the Stables Theatre. Awesome!

First produced in 1987, Emerald City follows the struggles of fading screenwriter Colin, who has not long moved to Sydney before being seduced by its obsession with success. Teaming up with well-connected hack writer Mike, Colin finds himself in a tug of war between artistic ambition and big bucks.

Ken Done designed the poster for the premiere season of Emerald City in 1987, produced by Sydney Theatre Company and directed by Richard Wherrett at the Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House.

I was thrilled to be asked to work on the project, said Done. It’s such a classic play and it is a joy to be working with Griffin and especially with the brightest director Lee Lewis.

Three decades after it was written, Emerald City still captures the ballsy spirit of the ’80s and retains the skewering sharpness with which it elbowed Sydney’s preoccupation with glitz and glamour. Part love letter, part hate mail to the harbour city, Emerald City is one of the best works by Australian theatre’s most beloved craftsman and commentator, David Williamson.
