Leigh Warren & Dancers — Seven
Seven is an emotionally charged and thought-provoking recent dance theatre production from South Australia’s Leigh Warren & Dancers, which tells the story of seven people who share a common but unfortunate trait — they are all in love with the illusion of love.
Winner of the 2008 Adelaide Fringe Award for Best Dance, it is guaranteed to get audiences’ blood rushing with its passionate themes of love, jealousy and betrayal.
The company’s dancers for 2009 include long-time members: Jo Roads and Deon Hastie plus several new company members: Lizzie Vilmanis, Christopher Hewitt, Natalie Allen, Lachlan Bell and Anthony Trojman.
In a major coup, celebrated Australian set designer Dan Potra has joined the team helping artistic director/choreographer Leigh Warren, realize his vision for this production. Dan designs for theatre, opera, dance, film, TV and large scale events nationally and internationally Dan’s ingeniously inventive design will see a space where anything can happen
says Leigh Warren.
Some text for the performance has been drawn from the play Speaking in Tongues and film Lantana by Andrew Bovell. The Seven creative team includes award-winning local designer India Flint (costume designer) — with Ian Moorhead & Adam Synnott composing the music, in association with Sascha Budimski.
The technically virtuosic movement language employed in this production is the result of work shopping the narrative components of the fairy tale itself,
says Warren. Physical theatre techniques are used to uncover an emotionally expressive movement language. Seven allows the movement to speak for itself — producing both the surprise and accessibility of a screenplay.
Leigh’s distinguished performing career included stints with Ballet Rambert, the Netherlands Dance Theatre and Nureyev and Friends. In 1993 Leigh formed his own company — Leigh Warren & Dancers. The company has performed for audiences in Holland, Singapore, London, Indonesia, Korea, Japan and all states of Australia.
