Parramasala Festival presents
The Sydney Premiere of Aakash Odedra in Rising
Lennox Theatre, Riverside — Saturday October 5 and Sunday October 6 at 8pm
Odedra captivates audiences in an instant with his speed, fluidity and his precise actions, which display his discipline and technical ability. Critics often comment on his “exquisite” use of his hands and “incredibly fast feet.”
Rising choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Russell Maliphant and Akram Khan will be remembered by Sydney’s dance audience for the accolades given them on previous visits. Odedra has also created his own solo for the production.
All the works call on Aakash’s background in the classical Indian dance disciplines of Kathak and Bharatanatyam while remaining intrinsically contemporary in style.
Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris said: “The NSW Government, through Destination NSW, is delighted to support this wonderful dance spectacular, an event which is part of the 2013 Parramasala festival.”
Member for Parramatta, Dr Geoffrey Lee, said: “As one of the most exciting emerging new stars in British/South Asian dance, Akesh Odedra brings an electrifying performance to the stage, something that is not to be missed. Our community is excited about Aakesh Odedra’s first visit to Australia.”
Western Sydney audiences now have the chance to see the work of amazing international choreographers previously only seen in the city,” said Parramasala Festival Director, David Malacari. “Increasingly, we are seeing the best national and international artists bring their work to Western Sydney through events like Parramasala. Aakash Odedra is an artist whose career has only just begun. His visit to Parramatta will be remembered by everyone in Sydney who loves dance.
