Legs On The Wall prepare to set sail for Birmingham to take part in
The Voyage, one of the biggest events of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad
A massive free outdoor spectacle with an anticipated audience of 10,000 people per night and a cast of over 200 performers and musicians. The production of The Voyage transforms Birmingham’s Victoria Square, taking the audience on an epic visual and aural journey over a series of six scenes that follow the adventures of a group of passengers who set sail upon an ocean liner to an unknown land.
In talking about the production, Patrick Nolan, Legs On The Wall’s Artistic Director and co-director of the production says, "The production turns the city centre into a massive film set, in which the audience becomes key players in the action. Starting out as the passengers on the docks, they set sail across the seas, get swept up in a huge storm, help rescue passengers washed overboard and finally become the welcoming party in the new land."Motionhouse and Legs On The Wall are the co-creators of The Voyage with the production being co-directed by Patrick Nolan and Kevin Finnan the respective Artistic Directors of each company. It is produced by the Birmingham Hippodrome, with original video design by the multi award winning Logela Multimedia. The cast includes 20 dancers from Motionhouse, 6 performers from Legs On The Wall, a choir of 40, a brass band of 35 and 120 community dancers and performers.
The central element of the set is an enormous ship, roughly 15 metres high, 45 metres long, and 6 metres wide, which serves as the main performance area for the aerialists and dancers. The projections by Spanish Basque company Logela Multimedia, utilise the latest in 3D video mapping technology, transforming the Town Hall into the various locations the ship journeys through.Music is being composed by Sophy Smith and Tim Dickinson, under the direction of the artistic team. Sophy and Tim are working directly with the 4 community choirs in the lead up to the production.
