Zakir Hussain To Tour In October

Zakir Hussain returns to the Sydney Opera House by popular demand on Friday, October 21.

Unrivalled for his life-affirming joy and physicality as a performer, Zakir Hussain’s return is enhanced by the vivid colour and athletic energy of the Meitei Pung Cholom Performing Troupe: the dancing drummers of Manipur.
A tabla master of peerless dexterity, playfulness and improvisational skill, he remains at the forefront of the contemporary world music revolution. His consistently brilliant and exciting performances have not only established him as a national treasure in his own country, India, but gained him worldwide fame.
Each member of his ensemble is also steeped in generations of Indian musical tradition, as well as making their individual marks from Bollywood scores to sessions with Stevie Wonder: Taufiq Qureshi (drums and percussion), Rakesh Chaurasia (bansuri — bamboo flute), Dilshad Khan (sarangi), Navin Sharma (dholak), Abbos Kosimov (doyra).
Ustad (“Maestro”) Zakir Hussain had the rhythms of the tabla whispered in his ear by his father, the legendary Ustad Allarakha, when he was a baby. A child prodigy, he was performing professionally at 12 and touring globally at 18.
Acknowledged as a living master by George Harrison, Ravi Shankar and John McLaughlin in the 1970s and Bela Fleck and Charles Lloyd in the 2000s, Zakir Hussain will combine his unique and exuberant approach to his instrument with the dazzling skills of some of India’s finest classical musicians.
